The location of your house and its local environment are factors which will influence the quality of air in the house. The Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) suggests that you study the neighbourhood.

Is the house located near a factory, a landfill, power lines or communication towers? Is there vegetation known to have irritating pollen? Is the house located near a golf course (which regularly use pesticides)? Is the house's air intake conduit located near the outlet for the dryer or near the neighbour's driveway? If you are new to the neighbourhood, talk to the neighbours. You may discover that the previous owner used pesticides or that the site previously was a gas station or a dump.

To help you in this, the CMHC prints several documents for those who suffer from allergies, asthma or sensitivity to the environment. You can get information on the Internet or by contacting the CMHC office nearest you.
